Simple Mental Health Exercises You Can Do to Improve Your Day

As you may know, there’s more to health and wellness than addressing our physical needs. Maintaining your mental health is essential in creating a more well-balanced and healthier lifestyle. By managing your stress and creating a strong foundation for your mental fortitude, you’re more likely to succeed in taking on new tasks and challenges throughout your day. That said, how is it that we can help improve our mental health throughout the day? Here are a few exercises that may help you in doing so.

Just Breathe

Deep and thorough breathing is a wonderful way to help reduce stress. You can start by taking deeper and slower breathes. Be conscious of your diaphragm expanding, and slowly release the air once you feel your lungs are full. You can aim to take 5-10 deep breaths before you carry on with your day.


If you’ve never tried meditating before, you can start by eliminating your regular distractions (computer, smartphone, etc.). Find a calm and quiet spot to sit down and take a few deep breaths. Allow your thoughts to maneuver themselves in your mind without actually acting on them. The goal here is to let these thoughts go while you achieve a relaxed and calm state.


If you’re feeling the mental anguish setting in, take a moment to stand up, get out of your chair, and get a nice thorough stretch in. A decent stretch every 30 minutes or so should help you refresh your mental clarity and will help with your blood circulation. You can also implement a short walk following your stretch.

Set Realistic Goals

Part of what can break you down mentally on a daily basis involves goals that are too far out of reach. Fleeting goals give you a sense of never-ending urgency, due to the fact that you’re not actually completing any tasks that set you closer to your end goal. By setting short term goals that are within your grasp, you’ll be sparing yourself the mental anguish and will give yourself a sense of accomplishment as you complete each task within your work day.

By implementing these strategies, you’re creating a stable solution for a healthier mental state throughout your day. The key here is consistency, you may find yourself implementing these strategies several times throughout your day. Once you are able to find a healthy balance, continue to utilize these exercises as you see fit!
