Tips on How to Advance Your Career

Many of us spend a large portion of our time devoted to our work. Understandably so, our work gives us a sense of purpose and opens up new opportunities in our lives where they didn’t exist before. That’s why many of us value our careers, we use our careers as a key indicator to our status and progress in our lives. In order for us to stay happy and motivated with our job, it’s also important for us to feel a sense of progression.
This can mean a number of things. Whether it be through accomplished goals, promotions, and newly earned job titles, progression can help give us that sense of accomplishment we need in order to maintain a healthy career. As such, here are a few tips on how you can advance your career.
Assess Your Career
A healthy habit that can help you advance your career involves assessment. Where do you stand at your current job? Do you feel as though you’re being compensated enough for what you bring to the table? Or do you think you’re progression has slowed a bit, and you can afford to work a little harder? Once you’re able to openly and honestly assess your career, you can start taking the next steps toward progression.
Be Willing to Learn and Take Constructive Criticism
Part of what brings value to you as an individual involves your willingness to learn and your ever-expanding skill set. Being proactive in our approach and taking our work home with us, so to speak, can greatly expand our value and offerings. This goes hand-in-hand with constructive criticism, we need to be able to overlook our egos and really listen to what others have to say in terms of our performance. If there is any truth to their constructive criticism, it’s up to us to make a change for the better. These signs of progression won’t go unnoticed.
Work Harder Than Others, and Let it Show
There will be a natural sense of competition in the workplace. That said, it’s up to you to earn your potential promotion by working harder than others. Stay consistent with your deliverables and offer to stick around a little later in order to get things done. Show others that you’re willing to go the extra mile. When you do so, you present the value you offer, and in turn, put yourself in a better position to advance your career.

Your focus should be to monitor your performance and make improvements where necessary.
